Yesterday morning, around 11h00, residents of the North looked up in the sky and saw a mysterious ‘rainbow’ around the sun, also referred to as a ‘halo’. Comments on social networks, which followed shortly after the occurrence, had bloggers speculating its meaning. The more superstitious insisted it was a sign of the end of the world, while others said it was ‘God sending all of us festive greetings’. ‘Halos’ are sometimes called ‘sun dogs’ or ‘phantom sun’. A 17-year-old girl lost control of the Ford Bantam bakkie she was driving just outside Swakopmund yesterday. According to a local law enforcement offi cer, Nicolene Engelbrecht from Otjiwarongo and 17-year-old Hansie Schoombee from Swakopmund were travelling in the bakkie at 13:30 on the D1901, 16km outside of Swakopmund, when Nicolene lost control of the car as she was allegedly driving at a high speed. The car overturned several times. Both Nicolene and Hansie were rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. Their condition is reported to be stable Read more about CLOSE CALL

Death toll rises on Namibian roads

This year’s Christmas season toll rose to 53 - only one less than the total recorded last year – with the death yesterday morning at around 06:00 of a young male aged between 21 and 25 years old on the Trans-Kalahari highway between Okahandja and Karibib.
