When you talk about hot hatches, there was a time when Volkswagen’s Golf was considered a benchmark amongst its peers, notably Mk 1, 2 and 3. Somehow Mk 5 was good but its peers, the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane R26 were brilliant and stole the show on certain key aspects that defines a true hot hatch. Then there was the introduction of the Mk3 Polo GTI to the South African market, but Opel’s Corsa OPC and Ford’s Fiesta ST were far too superior.

Veteran driver Jarno Trulli has hit out at the growing influence of so-called "pay drivers" in Formula 1. It is believed that, despite his 2012 contract, the Italian veteran could be ousted by Caterham in favour of the well-backed Renault refugee Vitaly Petrov.
Trulli suggested Renault, becoming Lotus for 2012, suffered in 2010 as the team collected sponsorship dollars brought by Russian Petrov and Bruno Senna. "Kubica is a great driver who can get the very best from the car and because of that they were a dark horse." he said. Read more about Pay-drivers ‘not good enough’

Marcos and Alejandro Patronelli return to take on the 2012 Dakar Rally though new engine capacity rules could open up the quad bike category. Marcos (winner in 2010) and Alejandro (winner in 2011) took on the Dakar 2011, with the title-holder suffering from an ankle injury.
Marcos had abandoned the race after three stages, leaving it up to his elder brother to take on competitors and ultimately triumph. In 2012 the Argentine duo's position is far from certain especially as they will be deprived of the Yamaha 900cc they piloted in 2010.
