The nomination of Black Africa’s Technical Director (TD), Brian Isaacs as part of the candidates that can be crowned as the Namibia Premier League (NPL) Coach of the Year has once again opened the debate on the difference between a TD and a coach.

A blow to Namibia’s medal hopes

Disaster struck for Namibia at the African Athletics Championships in Porto Novo, Benin, when Tjipekapora Herunga was disqualified from the 400 metres event.

Kamatuka quizzed over extortion claims

Allegations of extortion have hit the City of Windhoek’s political leadership after a bombshell suspicion emerged two months ago.

Windhoek City Deputy Mayor Gerson Kamatuka was summoned to explain claims that he had demanded a 10% stake in a company that had applied for land to put up a multi-million dollar steel project in Windhoek.

During a high-level meeting on March 26, Kamatuka denied allegations that he had asked businessman Ben Hauwanga to make available a stake in his N$21.7 million steel joint venture with South African tycoon Rami Barnes.

It was claimed that Kamatuka asked Hauwanga to make available the shareholding in return for a favourable consideration of his application. Read more about Kamatuka quizzed over extortion claims

Windhoek learners hijack taxi

WINDHOEK - SELMA IKELA
Two Grade 10 learners from Rocky Crest High School hijacked a taxi driver on Saturday evening and kept the taxi for personal use and going to school. One of the boys is allegedly the son of a Windhoek City Police officer.

The boys had apparently removed the number plates, taxi identification number and sign and put on fake number plates. Read more about Windhoek learners hijack taxi

Cabinet announces Meatco ownership

Against the recommendation of the Meatco Working Group, Cabinet has decided to claim a 30% share in the corporation.

After five years of wrangling between stakeholders and the Government, Cabinet has officially announced its future stake in Meatco and approved a unique cooperative with a majority of members’ shareholding of 70% and the Government taking a ‘golden share’ of 30%.

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, senior management and board members from Meatco, the Meat Board and the Abattoirs Association of Namibia were all present to hear the official word from the Minister. Read more about Cabinet announces Meatco ownership

Windhoek City facing harsh realities

The Council yesterday approved tariff adjustments, effective as of July 1, aimed at reducing the budget deficit of more than N$373 million.

At the same monthly meeting, the Chief Executive of the City, Niilo Taapopi, was instructed to implement strict cost control measures in an effort not to run up a deficit at year end. Read more about Windhoek City facing harsh realities

Race for SPYL leadership heats up

Ngurare may face a tough challenge during the youth league’s upcoming August congress after the SPYL leadership in the Ohangwena Region nominated Julius Nyerere Namholoh to vie for the top position.
