Allegations of extortion have hit the City of Windhoek’s political leadership after a bombshell suspicion emerged two months ago.
Windhoek City Deputy Mayor Gerson Kamatuka was summoned to explain claims that he had demanded a 10% stake in a company that had applied for land to put up a multi-million dollar steel project in Windhoek.
During a high-level meeting on March 26, Kamatuka denied allegations that he had asked businessman Ben Hauwanga to make available a stake in his N$21.7 million steel joint venture with South African tycoon Rami Barnes.

Against the recommendation of the Meatco Working Group, Cabinet has decided to claim a 30% share in the corporation.
After five years of wrangling between stakeholders and the Government, Cabinet has officially announced its future stake in Meatco and approved a unique cooperative with a majority of members’ shareholding of 70% and the Government taking a ‘golden share’ of 30%.
The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, senior management and board members from Meatco, the Meat Board and the Abattoirs Association of Namibia were all present to hear the official word from the Minister. Read more about Cabinet announces Meatco ownership

The Council yesterday approved tariff adjustments, effective as of July 1, aimed at reducing the budget deficit of more than N$373 million.
