All eyes on summit as euro crisis deepens

BRUSSELS - NAMPA/AFP
EU leaders debate ‘a big leap forward’ to strengthen their union and save the euro at a two-day summit that started yesterday, but divisions may scuttle efforts to shore up the single currency.

European Union heads of state and government met yesterday as the debt crisis, now in its third year, widens to Cyprus and Spain after contaminating Greece, Portugal and Ireland. Read more about All eyes on summit as euro crisis deepens

SA minister pushes land reform

JOHANNESBURG - NAMPA/AFP
South Africa's agriculture minister yesterday advocated the expropriation of white farmers, arguing that the ruling party's land reform had failed 18 years on from the end of apartheid.
NAMPA/SAPA

The African National Congress wants to use its right to seize land, with compensation, ending a policy of only buying land from willing sellers it argues has been costly and too slow at correcting one of apartheid's worst ills.

"The content for us on land reform is absolutely clear: the willing buyer-willing seller principle of land reform must go," Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson told the SAFM State-owned radio.

The sensitive land issue is one of the key topics at the ANC's policy conference which will put forward positions to a national year-end meeting. Read more about SA minister pushes land reform

Spear case postponed to September

PRETORIA - NAMPA/SAPA
The case against two men accused of vandalising a painting depicting President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed has been postponed until September 4.
File

Yesterday, Magistrate Johan Engelbrecht let rip with a rebuke lasting five minutes after prosecutor Frederick Bukes complained that the investigating officer had not fulfilled any of the investigative requirements, leading to the request for a postponement.

"This cannot be tolerated," Engelbrecht said.

He called the police's failure to do their work a "form of police brutality", because the cases of people still in the cells could be heard in the time they wasted. Read more about Spear case postponed to September

Syrian solutions ‘dictated from abroad’

MOSCOW - NAMPA/AFP
Russia says it backed a political transition in Syria but rejected Western pressure to call for the exit of President Bashar al-Assad ahead of international talks on ending the spiralling conflict.
NAMPA/AFP

Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov poured cold water on hopes that world powers have already agreed a common strategy ahead of the weekend talks in Geneva, saying Moscow was opposed to any solution imposed from abroad.

He also said it was a mistake to exclude Syria's ally Iran from Saturday's meeting of world and regional powers.

Assad's fate "must be decided within the framework of a Syrian dialogue by the Syrian people themselves," Lavrov told a news conference with his Tunisian counterpart. Read more about Syrian solutions ‘dictated from abroad’

Feedback on Meatco annual report

WINDHOEK - ELLANIE SMIT
Factors beyond Meatco’s control had a significant impact on the performance of the Corporation during the 2011/12 financial year.

The reallocation of the Namibian component of the Norway duty free quota as well as the impact of the implementation of the 90/40 day residency rule collectively reduced the revenue of the Corporation by about 47,9 million.

The reduced revenue from the Norwegian market due to an endorsement of a 50:50 allocation of the Namibian quota between Meatco and Witvlei Meat, reduced Meatco’s earnings by N$35,5 million in 2011/12. Read more about Feedback on Meatco annual report
