I’m fifty and I want a baby

Question:

Dear Auntie Nangy,

I am 50 years old with six children and I want a baby boy now. I am married and my husband loves me a lot but I don’t have a baby with him.

Answer:

There is a lot of risk involved in having a baby at your age and if you already had your menopause you will have to undergo assisted reproduction, which in essence means that you will have to have egg donations.

The risks involved with childbearing over the age of 50 include an increased incidence of diabetes, hypertension and miscarriage. In comparison to mothers under 30, mothers over 50 are at almost three times the risk of low birth rate and premature birth.

Speak to your doctor or gynaecologist as they will be best able to advise you.
